GENERIC NAME: BISACODYL (bis-a-KOE-dill)
COMMON USES: This medicine is a stimulant laxative used to treat constipation. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
HOW TO USE THIS MEDICINE: Use this medicine exactly as directed on the package, unless instructed differently by your doctor. IF THE SUPPOSITORY IS TOO SOFT TO USE, put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it. Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum. Wash your hands thoroughly after using this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, away from heat and light.
CAUTIONS: DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for longer than 1 week without checking with your doctor. If you overuse this medicine, it may damage your bowel. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you have stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting. Contact your doctor instead. DO NOT GIVE THIS MEDICINE TO A CHILD unless instructed to do so by a doctor.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS: SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include stomach cramps, nausea, diarrhea, gas, or anal irritation. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience vomiting, continuing constipation, weakness, dizziness, or rectal bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. BEFORE USING THIS MEDICINE: Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have appendicitis or a history of bowel obstruction. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using this medicine.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken this medicine by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
